Frequently Asked Questions

When Do You Need Dyno Tuning?

Typically dyno tuning a vehicle should be undertaken at the end of any material upgrade, in order to maximise the best operating potential of the engine, safely. In particular, dyno tuning is desirable if changes are made to the engine’s control unit (ECU), its ability to breathe (intake and exhaust), and/or it’s fuel management system that controls the air-fuel ratio.

Indeed, the dyno tuning process uses can determine the best proper air-fuel ratio by constantly monitoring the exhaust to verify the accuracy of an air-fuel mixture setting. Dyno tuning can help you gain the most possible power from your vehicle or its most economical tune setting. If you’re getting poor fuel mileage, surging, pinging, difficulty starting the vehicle or a lack of power dyno can help pinpoint the problem for you making it a much less time consuming exercise, and thus an overall cheaper exercise. A dyno tune can help resolve many of these problems.

A dyno tune can help resolve many of these problems.

How Much Does a Dyno Tune Cost?

Taking your car to a dyno tuning garage is the best way to not only improve performance, boost horsepower, and make the engine run more efficiently. Initial costs for a diagnosis and basic tuning (without replacement parts) can start at $400 to $700, however, a lot will depend on the make and model of the car. Sophisticated computer dynamics on a Mercedes C63 is much more complicated than on a Subaru WRX for example; a C63 tuned to Stage 2 (including ……..) starts at $1,750 incl’ GST. Just setting up a high-end Euro-car can be twice as expensive as a Japanese equivalent. There is always several different factors to take into account including what aftermarket or custom parts might be needed. Any parts that are needed to make the dyno tune worthwhile will have to be taken into account before deciding whether to proceed.

Some of the costs involved with the actual tuning on the dyno involve the technician going through an initial diagnostic run. Most people think that just one run is going to be enough. The best results are made when there are several runs on the dyno to determine the baseline of your engine. From there we can diagnose any problems that might be found, and make suggestions what can be done to achieve more power or better economy. Of course there are times when you will not need to add anything. However, if you want to get the best tuning job done you will more than likely need to replace some standard parts with aftermarket and/or custom parts. Best to call us so we can determine a quote for you so that there are no surprises.
